Google Introduces New AI Features for Gemini on Google TV
Google is enhancing the Gemini experience on Google TV with the launch of three innovative AI features, turning the platform into an interactive information hub. The rollout commenced on March 24, 2026, for Gemini-enabled devices in the United States and Canada.
The latest update aims to address a common inconvenience: the need to reach for your phone while watching TV to search for information. Google’s goal is to empower your television to fulfill that role seamlessly.
Key Enhancements
One of the new additions is the introduction of richer visual assistance, which enables Gemini’s responses to be contextually relevant. For instance, if you inquire about a recipe, you will receive a video tutorial. When checking sports scores, a live scorecard will appear alongside streaming options. The AI now curates visuals, videos, and text based on your specific queries, offering personalized results instead of generic information.
Another notable feature is the educational deep dives, where narrated visual breakdowns delve into various topics such as health, economics, and technology. These deep dives include interactive follow-up questions, providing families with valuable screen time. Users can access this content by directly asking Gemini or navigating to the “Learn” section in the Gemini tab.
Additionally, sports briefs have been introduced to expand Google’s existing news brief format to cover live sports events. This feature delivers narrated highlights and game summaries for popular sports leagues like NBA, NCAA basketball, NHL, MLB, MLS, and NWSL. It caters to fans who miss games but desire more than just scores, offering a comprehensive sports viewing experience without the need for multiple sports apps.
Availability and Compatibility
The rollout of richer visual assistance commenced on March 24 in the United States and Canada. Deep dives and sports briefs were also launched on the same day for U.S. users on Gemini-enabled devices, with broader device support expected in the coming months.
International expansion is on the horizon for 2026, with countries like Australia, New Zealand, and Great Britain set to receive the Gemini voice assistant this spring, followed by additional countries throughout the year. To access these features, users will need Android TV OS 14 or higher and an internet connection, restricting availability to newer hardware.
Google’s strategic integration of AI aligns with its overarching approach of embedding Gemini across various platforms where users already engage. The success of this rollout will determine whether TV viewers prefer AI-generated content summaries over traditional browsing methods.
