The Risks and Rewards of Mastercard’s Multi-Function AI Model
Implementing a multi-function AI model like Mastercard’s comes with its own set of risks. If such a widely-deployed model were to fail, the consequences could be system-wide. This is why Mastercard has chosen to integrate its technology alongside existing detection systems, at least for the time being.
Mastercard’s goal is to enhance the scale of data used in the model as well as its overall sophistication. The company also plans to provide API access and SDKs to empower internal teams to develop new applications.
The emphasis in the blog post is on the data responsibilities associated with the LTM. This includes considerations of privacy, transparency, model explainability, and auditability. Given that any system impacting credit decisions or fraud outcomes will be subject to regulatory scrutiny, it’s crucial to address data practices within the LTM’s operation.
The LTM primarily deals with highly structured data rather than text or images. Large tabular models could potentially usher in a new era of AI systems within core banking and payment infrastructure. However, it’s important to note that current evidence is limited to vendor reports, so performance claims should be approached with caution.
Tabular models face challenges such as robustness under adversarial conditions, long-term post-training costs, and regulatory acceptance. The success or failure of these models hinges on these factors, which will ultimately dictate the pace and extent of their adoption. Mastercard is placing its bets on tabular models as a key area of focus for now.
